People seek out (or are referred) for psychological assessments for a variety of reasons. Sometimes individuals have a history of undiagnosed learning or behavioural issues since childhood that have held them back in some way in their studies, work or personal lives. Other times, it’s due to ongoing issues with mood/anxiety, personality traits or negative patterns in relationships  in adulthood that have been getting in the way of their day-to-day functioning.

An adult Psychological Assessment can help to:

  • Identify a mental health diagnosis if present
  • Understand what is contributing to your mental health problems
  • Help with developing an effective treatment plan based on outcome of your assessment
  • Provide documentation for Short or Long Term Disability claims to your employer/insurer

Your psychological assessment will be tailored to address your unique concerns and make appropriate recommendations for work, school or home if appropriate.

What is The Process of Getting a Psychological Assessment?

Depending on the complexity, a psychological assessment can take between 3-4 sessions and includes:
  • A  50-60min first session interview covering broadly your daily functioning, recent life experiences, school/work/social stressors and general background
  • A second 60-90min follow up session to get an in-depth understanding of your history (childhood experiences, relationships, physical and mental health)
  • Completion of online rating scales relating to various areas of concern (i.e. mood, social skills, personality)
  • With your consent, a brief  interview with a partner/family member/health professional or a person who you trust that has known you for more than a year.
  • Review of any documentation you may have from previous psychological or medical reports/consults
  • A detailed report will be created summarizing your challenges, your results and diagnostic considerations. The report will also include recommendations for treatment/support and resources.
  • Once the report is completed, a 50-60min feedback session will be scheduled to go through it with you and share the results. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss together next steps and receive information on further support
