What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy or  “talk therapy,” involves speaking to a therapist to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and learn coping skills to manage difficulties. Unlike talking to a trusted friend or family member, opening up to a therapist can give you insight into your thoughts and feelings and learn new, healthy ways to manage difficult situations.

Different Types of Therapy

Depending on your preferences and specific symptoms, mental health professionals may recommend different types of psychotherapy, such as:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy focuses on identifying and challenging thoughts that negatively impact your feelings and behaviour.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy focuses on developing healthy coping skills to manage stress, regulate emotions and improve your relationship with others.

Acceptance & Comittment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy focuses on increasing your psychological flexibility using acceptance strategies, mindfulness, and commitment to behavioural change.
