An ADHD Assessment may be of benefit if you or a loved one are:
- Easily distracted and not able to focus on what you need to do
- Often forgetful or misplacing things
- Often feeling scattered, overwhelmed or highly irritable
- Have difficulty executing what you need to do (even though you planned it all out)
- Get bored easily or feel like you always have to be doing something
- Struggle starting or finishing tasks/chores/activities (especially when it’s something you want to do!)
- Constantly overestimate/underestimate time it takes to do things or go places
I know I have difficulties but do I really need an ADHD Assessment?
Pursuing an ADHD assessment doesn’t mean you’re not functioning well. If you’re going to work or school and getting through your days but notice it takes a lot of mental energy and effort then doing an ADHD assessment can be worth it especially if you’ve had a history of struggling. An assessment can help you to better understand your difficulties and identify important next steps to improve your day-to-day functioning.
Often these types of assessments are also requested by employers or academic programs to determine eligibility for accommodations and access to services.
What is The Process of Getting an ADHD Assessment?
An assessment will gather an in-depth understanding of your challenges and include:
- A 50-60min first session interview covering broadly your daily functioning, strengths, difficulties and background
- A second 60-90min follow up session to get an in-depth understanding of your developmental and academic history. This would include discussing your childhood, school and work experiences.
- Completion of online rating scales relating to your difficulties and development
- With your consent, a brief interview with a partner/family member/health professional or a person who you trust that has known you for more than a year.
- Review of any documentation you may have available from previous psychological assessments or school (i.e. previous report cards, evaluations)
- Depending on needs, the assessment may also include evaluation of your social and emotional development
- A detailed report will be created summarizing your presenting concerns, results and diagnostic considerations. The report will also include recommendations for treatment/support and resources.
- Once the report is completed, a feedback session will be scheduled to go through it with you and share the results. The assessment may or may not lead to a diagnosis of ADHD. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss results, the next steps and receive information on further support.
*Note: ADHD assessments at Lake Wellness do not include the cognitive/memory/achievement psychometric testing provided in other in-depth assessment programs. This substantially increases the cost to the client to receive an assessment, and depending on the purpose, may not be necessary.
